The Sicamous Eagles will begin their 2017/18 season under the wing of a new head coach.
Rob Fitzpatrick will be replacing Matt Stang as the ³Ù±ð²¹³¾â€™s bench boss.
A Tuesday, Feb. 28 news release from the Sicamous Eagles Junior Hockey Club says Fitzpatrick, of Sicamous, is a former coach of the °±õ´³±á³¢â€™s Grand Forks Border Bruins, Revelstoke Grizzlies and North Okanagan Knights, and most recently coached the Salmon Arm Midget T1.
“W±ð’r±ð excited to have him on the ice with our junior ³Ù±ð²¹³¾,†said Eagles general manager Wayne March.
The change-up follows a rocky regular-season that saw Stang replace former head coach Ty Davidson two months and zero wins in. Under Stang, the Eagles slogged through the rest of the season to earn 10 wins and 21 points, but were unable to claw their way into the playoffs.
March says the first two months set the tone for the rest of the season.
“T³ó±ð first quarter of season, it killed ³Ü²õ,†said March. “W³ó±ð²Ô you lose your first 14 games in a row, ¾±³Ù’s pretty near impossible to climb your way back up into a playoff ±è´Ç²õ¾±³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô.â€
March acknowledges the team improved under Stang, but were still encumbered by the number of roster changes that occurred.
“W±ð made, basically, 23 changes on our team when he got ³ó±ð°ù±ð,†said March. “T³ó²¹³Ù late in the season, you start making player changes, other than a couple, about three or four, it »å¾±»å²Ô’t make any »å¾±´Ú´Ú±ð°ù±ð²Ô³¦±ð… And ³Ù³ó²¹³Ù’s what I was disappointed ¾±²Ô.â€
March adds he places no blame on the players who stuck it out to the end.
“T³ó±ðy played their hearts out the best they could and ±õ’v±ð got all the respect in the world for ³Ù³ó±ð³¾,†said March. â€Âٴdz¾±ð kids could have folded their tent and said ³Ù³ó²¹³Ù’s enough for me and left. But they »å¾±»å²Ô’t, they stuck it out right to the bitter end and gave it their ²ú±ð²õ³Ù.â€
March said he will be assessing what worked and what »å¾±»å²Ô’t over the past eight months, while moving forward with Fitzpatrick to build a new team for the upcoming season.
â€Ô¨´Ç³Ü’v±ð got to look at what »å¾±»å²Ô’t work, what did work and try to work with both ends of it so ²â´Ç³Ü’v±ð got a common denominator in the ³¾¾±»å»å±ô±ð,†said March. â€Àá think ²â´Ç³Ü’l±ô see a lot better and different team here next year. ±õ’m positive you will. This gives us a whole summer to work on recruiting and looking for players. I hope some of our better ones come ²ú²¹³¦°ì.â€
