Two teams familiar with one other meet for provincial gold medal

You can forgive the Enderby Storm if they've seen and had enough of the Fleetwood Lightning of Surrey.

The Lightning defeated the Storm 10-3 in the gold-medal final, Sunday, at the B.C. U20C Women's Fastball Championships, held July 4-6 at Grahame Park in Vernon.

It was the second meeting of the day and third contest of the provincials for the two rivals. Fleetwood won all three games, the first in the round-robin, and the second in the playoffs, both by one run.

Big-city Fleetwood and small-town Enderby's rosters are loaded with players at the U17 level. Fleetwood defeated Enderby in the final of the 2024 U15 championships.

The silver medal Sunday marked the fourth consecutive year a team from the Enderby Fastball Association has won a medal at the B.C. Championships.

After going 2-2 in the round-robin Friday and Saturday, the Storm opened the double-knockout playoffs Saturday evening with a come-from-behind rally to beat the host Vernon Vortex 16-15.

Enderby then returned to the diamond Sunday, knocking off the Alberni Valley Blazers of Port Alberni before falling to Fleetwood. The Storm got by Alberni Valley again in the what was the tournament's bronze-medal game to advance to the championship to play the Surrey squad.

Each team played four preliminary round games, and all teams endured 30-plus degree Celsius heat and sunshine throughout the weekend.

The top eight teams following the round-robin of the 15-team tournament advanced to the double knockout gold playoffs, while the bottom seven teams played in the silver playoffs for positioning.

The Blazers finished atop the round-robin, followed by the Lightning. The Ridge Meadows Dynamite (third), Storm (fourth), Vortex (fifth), Ridge Meadows Chaos (sixth), West Kootenay Rebels (Trail-Rossland, seventh), and North Shore Bears (North Vancouver, eighth) advanced to the playoff round.

Enderby dropped its opening two games Friday, falling 8-7 to the North Langley Red Sox, and 10-9 to the Lightning. The Storm got into the win column Saturday, defeating the Langley Flames 6-3, and the Ridge Meadowns Chaos 13-5.

Alberni Valley and Fleetwood Lightning went 4-0. The Blazers defeated the Abbotsford Tsunami 9-4, doubled the West Kootenay Rebels 10-5, blanked the Coquitlam Cylcones 10-0, and downed the Ridge Meadows Dynamite 7-3.

Fleetwood was given all it could handle by the two North Okanagan entries, beating the Vortex 12-10 and the Storm in the round-robin. The Lightning shutout their other two preliminary opponents, the Langley Flames, 10-0, and the Kamloops Khaos, 11-0.

Vernon went 2-2 prior to the playoffs, losing 9-8 in its opener to the Bears, then scored a 14-7 win over the New Westminster Royals, and a 12-8 decision against the Ridge Meadows Chaos before losing to the Lightning.

The Tsunami, Flames, Royals, Khaos, Cyclones, Red Sox and Fleetwood Rebels of Surrey played in the consolation bracket.

The Rebels went 0-4 in the preliminary round. Fleetwood fell 12-5 to the West Kootenays in the Battle of the Rebels; dropped an 11-7 decision to the Ridge Meadows Dynamite; lost 9-4 to the North Shore Bears; and were swamped 12-3 by the Tsunami.
