This year, to celebrate 10 years of giving, the Thorpe family decided to give money to twice as many UBC students as in previous years.

It was 2006 when the Rick and Yasmin Thorpe & Friends Scholarship was established. Coming from the south Okanagan, the °Õ³ó´Ç°ù±è±ð’s goal is assist students living in that region — donating to two university-bound students each year who are graduating from schools located on the west side of Okanagan Lake, from Penticton to Killiney Beach.

This year, they have provided a scholarship for four first-year students who willeach receive $2,500.

â€Áè¾±³¦°ì and I are pleased to be able to assist these ²õ³Ù³Ü»å±ð²Ô³Ù²õ,†says Yasmin John-Thorpe. “T³ó±ð²â are our future, and we wish them all the best with their ²õ³Ù³Ü»å¾±±ð²õ.â€

Students who received a $2,500 entrance scholarship from the Thorpe foundations this year are Mount Boucherie Secondary School graduates Alyssa Liegmann,Gurpreet Saini and Thomas Girard. Kohl Finlayson, a Princess Margaret Secondary School graduate, also won a $2,500 Rick and Yasmin Thorpe & Friends Scholarship. All four students are working towards their Bachelor of Science degrees.

Director of Development at ±«µþ°ä’s Okanagan campus Adrienne Nolan says awards like the annual Rick and Yasmin Thorpe and Friends Entrance Scholarship have helped grow the young campus by supporting the ³Ü²Ô¾±±¹±ð°ù²õ¾±³Ù²â’s first decade of students.

“W±ð are grateful to the Thorpe family, whose generosity and passion for helping Okanagan students has created opportunities that will yield benefits long into thef uture,†says Nolan. “T³ó±ð°ù±ð is a great need for scholarships to assist students in pursuing post-secondary education. We hope the leadership shown by the Thorpes will encourage Okanagan students to pursue their opportunities at UBC °¿°ì²¹²Ô²¹²µ²¹²Ô.â€
