Scheduled maintenance work will soon begin along the Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail near the historic Adra Tunnel in Naramata, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) announced.
Starting the week of July 14, Recreation Sites and Trails BC contractors will remove a failed culvert at the KVR and Robinson Creek crossing.
The culvert is located about 13 metres below the rail grade and will be replaced with a clear-span bridge to facilitate stream restoration on Robinson Creek.
RDOS officials described the maintenance work as "critical" in a press release.
Safety-related access restrictions will be in place between Glenfir and Adra Tunnel until construction is complete. Vehicle access between the Glenfir parking area and Adra Tunnel will be unavailable during construction, the RDOS added.
Trail users, meanwhile, will be able to take a short bypass near Robinson Creek to avoid construction.
"Access will be controlled with spotters and flaggers," reads the release. "Recreation users should anticipate access restrictions and construction traffic in this area."
The project, located at kilometre 186.5 on the KVR Trail between the Glenfir parking area (km 192) and Adra Tunnel (km 184), is funded through the Critical Rail Trail Maintenance grant.
Construction is expected to be completed by late fall 2026, according to RDOS.
Its schedule for work includes:
• Construction of new and upgraded bypass routes
• Site preparation and removal of deep earth fill
• Stream restoration activities
Adra Tunnel, a more than 100-year-old Okanagan attraction, reopened for public use earlier this year following the completion of a restoration project. The tunnel closed in the early 1990s due to unstable conditions.
