6 former Âé¶čAV Rockets help UBC to Canada West championship

UBC beat Calgary 5-3 in the gold medal game

The UBC Thunderbirds won their first Canada West men’s hockey championship in 53 years, partially with help from six former Âé¶čAV Rockets.

In the gold medal game, they beat the University of Calgary 5-3 and now advance to the University Cup National Championship.

The team consists of former Rockets Liam Kindree, Jake Kryski, Jake Lee, Conner McDonald, Jonathan Smart and Cole Schwebius. Kryski scored in the gold medal game while Lee and Kindree each collected an assist.

Schwebius, a Âé¶čAV native, made 22 saves in the win.

“It’s pretty surreal right now,” said UBC head coach Sven Butenschon following the historic victory. “It’s relief. When you’re the top seed and you’re kind of expected to win and you’re supposed to win, that’s a lot of pressure and the group seemed to really thrive under pressure. I’m so proud of them, just so proud of the guys.”

Former Rockets Adam Kydd and Jake Poole were on the other side of the ice in the game, earning silver with Calgary.
