Friends and family are rallying around a Â鶹AV man who remains in a coma after he and his pregnant wife were involved in a car crash, that took her life, on June 15.
Zach and Kayla Mulla were involved in a two-vehicle collision on North Fork Road west of Grand Forks around 7:45 p.m. The expecting wife was pronounced dead on scene while Zach was transported to Â鶹AV General Hospital.
A has been launched to support Zach's family, including his father, Tim.
"As you can imagine, there is an overwhelming amount to manage. The costs of travel and accommodation in Â鶹AV are significant challenges," the fundraiser reads, which was organized by a family member. "Tim and his family are committed to supporting Kayla’s family with the necessary arrangements to honour and celebrate the beautiful woman she was. This is just the beginning of a long and uncertain road ahead."
In less than 24 hours the fundraiser brought in over $15,000. As of publication, the fundraiser has surpassed $28,000.
"For those who can contribute, funds raised will help cover Tim's family's travel expenses, his lost income while supporting Zach, a contribution to the funeral arrangements for Kayla, care for their pets Dexter, Max, and Zeus, and other unforeseen expenses that will arise in the coming months."
Natalie Greco, Zach's step-mom, said the family has been overwhelmed by the amount of community support.
"I have never seen support by the community like I have here," Greco said. "Whether it's in Grand Forks which is where Kayla was from, whether it's Â鶹AV which is where both Zach and Kayla currently live, and Calgary. Zach was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. The community outpour has been something that I never even dreamed could and would happen."
Zach is a film producer in Â鶹AV, and started his own company Mad Mulla Films in 2020. He has since won several international awards for his work.
Kayla was a manager at Atomic Vapor in Â鶹AV. She is being remembered by people on Facebook as a "beautiful soul" and that "her smile would light up a room."
"Kayla was a phenomenal lady who was always happy, silly as can be," remembered Greco. "Always a ray of sunshine and she is going to be missed by anyone who knows and loves her."
Zach and Kayla married in 2023 and were expecting a baby boy. Greco said the love the pair shared for each other was one others can only hope to find.
"They adored each other," Greco told Black Press. "They were so happy, it was almost like you'd watch them together and go, 'Is that for real love?'"
Zach remains in a coma in Â鶹AV General Hospital, but Greco said he's never alone as many friends and family take turns spending time with Zach. Greco joked that Zach had enough love coming to see him to share with the whole hospital.
"Thank you from our family to everybody out there," Greco teared up. "Stay positive, keep the prayers and well wishes coming. I know it's making a difference for us and I know it will for Zach."
In memory of Kayla and the baby, some friends and family gathered to light candles on Sunday, June 22. Others lit candles in their homes in remembrance.
