The Regional District of Central Okanaganâs (RDCO) free tire collection event is in September.
People can drop off unlimited old or unused tires on or off rims for free, for residential cleanup only. Businesses that sell or generate tires can call 1-866-497-0281 to arrange for pickup.
Tires left lying around are potential breeding grounds for mosquitos.
âIt only takes a few centimeters of water inside old tires on your property to provide the perfect habitat for mosquito larvae,â said Curtis Fediuk, president of Duka Environmental Services Ltd. âBy dropping off unwanted tires, youâll reduce opportunities for mosquitoes to hatch.â
Residents can help reduce mosquito development by:
Remove any standing water sources and items that collect water such as old tires, plant pots or garbage cans;
- Cover rain barrels with a screen so that mosquitoes canât lay their eggs in the water;
- Change the water in birdbaths, wading pools and pet bowls at least twice a week;
- Remove any water that sits in unused swimming pools or on covers;
- Aerate water in ponds to keep it moving or add fish to feed on mosquito larvae.
The tire event is Saturday, Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Okanagan College, 1000 KLO Road in parking lot 17.
