A programs for cyclists is back in downtown Âé¶čAV while the RCMP are sending an important reminder.
On Monday, May 19, the City of Âé¶čAV relaunched their annual Bike Valet program, giving cyclists a chance to safely lock up their bikes in the downtown core.
The service located at the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Mill Street and is available Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
âThe Âé¶čAV RCMP are excited to see this program back for a third year,â said Âé¶čAV RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Allison Konsmo. âThis program has proven to be a valuable option for riders and helps reduce bike thefts in the downtown core."
If cyclists are now able to use the facility, the RCMP reminds residents to do what they can to keep their bike safe with the following tips:
- Using high quality locks that can lock the frame and wheels together;
- Considering trying out a high-tech smart lock for extra security;
- Registering bicycles with websites like that can help identify and recover stolen bicycles;
- Avoiding leaving bicycles unattended overnight or in isolated, dim lit areas;
- Having the details of your bicycle written down including the make, model, year, approximate worth, serial numbers and photographs greatly assists the police in the recovery of your bicycle.
- Making your bicycle unique with personalized elements allowing for easier identification and harder for thieves to sell compared to a more generic style bicycle.
"Along with these important safety tips to keep your bike safe, donât forget to keep yourself safe by wearing a helmet, riding in the appropriate bicycle lanes and wearing high visible clothing,â added Konsmo. âMaking sure that drivers and other cyclists can see you on the road, makes for a safer cycling community.â
