A North Vancouver duo is as hot as the weather on the opening day of the 36-hole 2025 G&G Brands/Callaway Golf Pro-Assistant Golf Championship at The Rise Resort in Vernon.
James Legault and Steven Lecuyer from the Seymour Creek Golf Centre fired a 14-under-par 58 in the two-pro best-ball competition Monday, July 7. That included a spectacular 59 from Lecuyer on his own ball.
The pair took a three-shot lead into the final round, which teed off at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The team enjoyed a spectacular round that saw them make 10 birdies and two eagles, avoiding a single blemish in the form of bogeys.
Lecuyer, who was playing The Rise Resort for the first time, powered the duo throughout the majority of the round.
At 12-under through 16 holes, Lecuyer eagled the first (field started on all 18 holes in the shotgun start) to jump to 14-under par on his own ball. On the duoâs final hole, Lecuyer made his first and only bogey of the round, while Legault made par to keep their team score at 14-under.
âIt started really well. We birdied one, birdied two. And he just started making putts,â said Legault. âHe always hits the golf ball well, but the putting was insane. It just kept going all day long.â
Lecuyer said his putt for eagle on the first hole, their 17th of the day, was the highlight of the round.
âThere was a putt I hit on No. 1 that I couldnât believe went in. Some would say it was a miracle. We wanted a miracle, and I think we got it. A very strange putt, it shouldnât have gone in but it did,â said Lecuyer.
Three strokes back and sitting in second place, three-time Pro-Assistant champions Brian McDonald and Rob Tadey (Fairview Mountain Golf Club, Oliver) fired an 11-under 61 with 11 birdies.
Three teams were tied for third place at 9-under entering play Tuesday, including the Vernon Golf and Country Club pair of Adam Blair and Myles Johnson. They're joined by Sergej Dronov and Mewail Kidane (Pacific Golf Academy, Richmond), and Ryan Stugis and Finlay Young (Groove4Golf, Âé¶čAV).
