Vernon grass fire doused, caused by illegal fireworks

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and fire crews quickly responded and contained the blaze

Illegal fireworks on Canada Day caused a grass fire, which was quickly doused by Vernon RCMP and firefighters.

Crews responded at approximately 11 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, in the area of Bella Vista and Okanagan Hills Boulevard.

RCMP and Vernon Fire Rescue Services were able to contain the fire before any structures were at risk.

"Evidence gathered at the scene led police to believe illegal fireworks were the cause," said Cpl. Tania Finn, media relations officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. "The evidence was seized for testing by our Forensic Identification Section."

Police interviewed many witnesses and believed that the fire started between 10:40 and 10:50 p.m., as witnesses saw two persons on a dirt bike wearing full-face helmets in the area.

Any information on the incident, or dashcam footage of Bella Vista Road should be communicated to Const. Bengtsson at 1-800-222-8477, or leave a tip online at .

Individuals who provide information that leads to an arrest could be eligible for a cash reward.
