Vandalism last weekend led to significant damage, including some flooding, at Naramata parks.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) said vandals caused "extensive" damage at Manitou Park and Wharf Park over the weekend of July 18.

Flooding of the public pit toilet at Wharf Park in particular forced the temporary closure of the toilet and required "intensive cleanup" by RDOS staff.

At Manitou Park, meanwhile, several solar bollards were forcibly removed and thrown into Okanagan Lake, the RDOS said in a press release.

In addition, the park's irrigation system was damaged. Multiple toilets were also intentionally blocked, requiring a plumbing contractor to conduct repairs. Two of the six washroom stalls at Manitou Park were closed for three days due to the damage, the RDOS added. This marked the second time in less than a year that vandals have

Adrienne Fedrigo, RDOS director for Naramata, said the vandalism is estimated to cost residents close to $10,000.

“This intentional damage impacts public amenities and diverts resources away from community improvements," Fedrigo said.

Provincial environmental and health authorities have been notified about the vandalism, according to the RDOS. Both are involved in the response.

"The RDOS is working with local authorities to investigate the incidents and encourages anyone with information to come forward," its press release reads.
