There are heavy hearts in Lake Country.
Owen Dickie, Oyamaâs representative on district council, died Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 61.
âHe represented Oyama well and all of Lake Country,â said Mayor James Baker.
Dickie moved to Oyama in 1989 and after retiring as a home inspector, he was elected as the ward councillor in 2011.
âHe was our Energizer bunny. He was so eager on everything,â said Baker.
âHe was a hard worker and he had the welfare of the community at heart. Every committee he was on he was a major asset.â
In a statement, Dickieâs family pointed out that he always gave 100 per cent and was never unprepared.
âHe kept Oyama residents well informed of council activities, worked on funding for senior housing in Lake Country, and had a new playground in Oyama constructed. He was a driving force behind the purchase of the rail trail and was very proud that it will be a place for his children and grandchildren to explore for years to come,â they stated.
Beyond council, he was very active in the community, including helping with Fun Day, Christmas, and Halloween activities, community hall maintenance and building Oyamaâs community garden.
Dickie is survived by his wife Marj, three children and four grandchildren.
âOwen will be remembered by all who knew him as having a zest for living life to its fullest, never being afraid to take on a challenge, big or small, and for having worked with determination at any project he took on,â states the family.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oyama Community Hall.
