With the Scatchard Mountain wildfire being held, Neskonlith band members on evacuation order since Monday are able to return home.
The evacuation order for reserve land west of Chase was rescinded by the band at noon on Wednesday, July 2, with an evacuation alert taking its place. The order was informally issued Monday afternoon (and formally Monday evening), June 30, soon after the human-caused blaze ignited.
Chase Fire Rescue and the BC Wildfire Service quickly responded, with the latter sending in three initial attack crews along with air support, including two helicopters and multiple fixed-winged aircraft.
Later in the day, the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) issued an evacuation alert for nine properties in the area.
By Monday evening the fire had grow to 35 hectares. BCWS continued actioning the blaze overnight with a unit crew and a helicopter equipped with night vision. Efforts continued the following day and, come the evening of July 1, the fire was reclassified from out of control to being held.
The band said BCWS crews continue to secure and reinforce the fire perimeter. Residents on alert were advised to be prepared with a go-bag on hand should conditions change.
As of noon on July 2, BCWS has a crew of 45 firefighters working the blaze, strengthening control lines.
"While the situation has improved, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant, limit backcountry activity, and keep communications open," said the band.
The TNRD's evacuation alert remains in effect.
