For the second night in a row and the sixth time since Canada Day, emergency services will be unavailable in Oliver.

The South Okanagan General Hospital's emergency room will be closed from 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, to 7 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, Interior Health (IH) said.

It marks the second time in 24 hours the regional health authority has announced an overnight closure of the community's emergency department.

Patients are instead being directed to access care at Penticton Regional Hospital during this time.

IH did not provide a reason for the shutdown, however, the Oliver facility has had repeated issues with staffing shortages over the last two years.

All other inpatient services will continue as normal.

Nearby, in Keremeos, emergency services were also made temporarily unavailable on July 15 at the South Similkameen Health Centre. The department was closed from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

"People in the community who need life-threatening emergency care (i.e., chest pains, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding) should always call 911 for transport to the nearest available and appropriate facility," IH said in its announcement.
