With approximately 60,000 people expected to take part in this long weekendâs Canada Day festivities in downtown Âé¶čAV, the waters of Okanagan Lake will be much busier than usual.
Âé¶čAV RCMP are reminding the public of some useful tips to prevent on-water accidents.
âThe RCMPâs vision is to eliminate senseless and preventable deaths on our waterways,â reads a news release.
âThe majority of accidents are caused by the boat operator and not by mechanical, equipment failure or environmental causes.â
Before heading on the water, boaters should always make sure there are enough lifejackets on board for everyone.
Human carelessness and speed are two of the largest contributors to injury, said Inspector Rob Pikola of the West Âé¶čAV RCMP.
âPlease donât race your boats on the lake.â
If swimming, RCMP are warning not to push your limits, as many drowning incidents are from fatigue and being too far from shore.
Police will be out on the water all weekend.
