Vernon team rescues hazardous bundle of tires floating in Okanagan Lake

'This submerged hazard would be extremely dangerous if hit at speed,' Vernon Search and Rescue said Monday

Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) removed a "wheely" dangerous hazard from Okanagan Lake over the weekend.

The VSAR team was conducting training on the water when members spotted a partially visible, semi-submerged hazard.

As they got closer, they discovered it was a number of tires all tied together, floating just barely at surface level.

"This submerged hazard would be extremely dangerous if hit at speed by any vessel, such as a high-speed personal watercraft or a ski boat towing a waterskiier or wakeboarder," VSAR said Monday.

The tires were removed from the lake by the VSAR members.

"VSAR would like to remind the public to always be vigilant for the unexpected when enjoying the beautiful BC outdoors, and whenever possible, leave the area/environment cleaner than how you found it," the team added.
