A low number of FireSmart grant applications in the community had West Âé¶čAV Mayor Gord Milsom asking questions at council’s Oct. 22 meeting.

Just nine homeowners have applied for the grant.

“I thought there would be many more applicants, particularly after our experience with the McDougall Creek wildfire last year,” Milsom said.

Fire Chief Jason Brolund noted it is FireSmart season right now and the department is pushing hard to complete home assessments.

“Our staff, in the third quarter, have completed 60 home assessments and working overtime to complete more,” he added.

Home assessments are a pre-requisite to receiving a grant which is funded by the province through the city.

“It’s a little bit of added complexity to the grant program this year and could be contributing to the those lower numbers,” Brolund pointed out. “My message to people is the grants are still open and will be until Nov. 1.”
