According to a 2022 Adult Literacy Report by Statistics Canada, 49 per cent of the adult population scored below high-school levels.
In Âé¶čAV, the Project Literacy Adult Team Spelling Bee Fundraiser collects funds for community literacy programs.
The event sees teams working together to determine the correct spelling of each word, with the team captain having the final say on the correct spelling.
âSpelling words is a great way to think about our language, and how thoughts create words to express how we feel,â said Paul Zuurbier, Project Literacy Central Okanagan Society, executive director.
The event is sponsored by Pushor Mitchell Lawyers and Source Office Furniture.
âItâs not only a fun team-bonding event but a way to support a great cause,â said Joni Metherell, Pushor Mitchell, managing partner. âProject Literacyâs youth and adult education programs help build up our community and have a lasting, positive impact on the personal and professional lives of people.
This yearâs teams include Pushor Mitchell, Okanagan College, Âé¶čAV and Sunrise Rotaries, Urban Systems, Valley First, and Seniors for Learning in Retirement.
The 5th Annual Adult Team Spelling Bee Fundraiser is Thursday, June 6 at the Coast Capri Hotel.
