A new enforceable 30 km/h speed limit is in effect along the Gellatly Road water front.

A new 30 km/h speed limit along a stretch of Gellatly Road is now in effect.

New speed limit signs have been installed between Boucherie Rd. and Gellatly Rd. South, and the change is now enforceable by the RCMP.

Previous yellow 30 km/h signs along the road were not enforceable.

“This change aims to enhance safety and create a more accessible environment for all corridor users,” the city said in a statement, noting it is also working with the RCMP to increase enforcement in the area.

The reduced speed limit was approved by council at its July 8 meeting and lowers the previous 50 km/h limit to 30 km/h.

The corridor includes vehicle traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians, and is especially busy during the summer.

City staff said the previous speed limit “did not reflect the corridor’s multi-use nature,” which includes access to beaches, trail networks, parks, playgrounds, a boat launch, the CNR Wharf, bicycle routes, and parking areas.
