A report going to council on Mar. 25 recommends the mayor’s salary be increased from $126,497 to $145,200, and councillor salaries be hiked from $42,991 to $58,080.

An internal staff review circulated to the previous council for information in April 2022, found Âé¶čAV’s remuneration among the lowest compared with municipalities of similar or smaller populations.

A recent review of 12 municipalities by the City of Victoria identified Âé¶čAV mayor remuneration as lower than all comparable cities except Kamloops.

Councillor remuneration, as a base percentage of the mayor’s remuneration and in dollars, was last.

The report points out that council remuneration should reflect time commitment, employment and financial impacts of being an elected official, and the complexity and responsibilities of being in office.

“The total cost of the above-noted recommendation is $139,413.60 and will be funded from financial savings identified through implementation of the digital transformation strategy,” the report states.

In 2021, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation criticized previous council for voting themselves a pay hike during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, the mayor’s salary was approximately $110,000 per year, and a councillor earned about $37,000.
