A Âé¶čAV bakery is stepping up to support the young daughters of a local woman whose life was cut short in an alleged case of domestic violence.
On Tuesday, July 15, Cupcasions will donate 100 per cent of its sales to the family of Bailey McCourt, a young mother tragically killed in an attack on July 4.
âBaileyâs Day,â is being held in her honour, with all proceeds going directly to her father, who is caring for her children.
âAfter reading about Baileyâs passing, I felt compelled to help,â said Cupcasions owner Libbie Philips, a survivor of domestic abuse. âWe had the joy of creating the cake and cupcakes for Baileyâs wedding in 2022. Iâll never forget her smile while picking her favourite flavours, and I got to snuggle her youngest daughterâjust a baby at the time. It breaks our hearts to know that both girls have now lost their mom.â
James Plover has been charged with second-degree murder in the July 4 attack.
With permission from Baileyâs father, Shane McCourt, the bakery will donate the entire dayâs revenue to help cover urgent family needs, childcare costs, and legal expenses.
Philips hopes the event will do more than raise money.
âBaileyâs story highlights a tragic reality,â she said. âOur system too often places the burden on victims to provide evidence of abuse, while alleged abusers are able to continue with their lives. Her family hopes (this) will lead to increased awareness of the issues within the system and spark much-needed change.â
Though GoFundMe have been launched for the family, those donations are subject to platform fees and delays.
On July 15, supporters can also bring cash or cheque donations payable directly to Shane McCourt. A trust fund for the girls is also being set up, with details to come.
During the event, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Cupcasions will be offering:
- A special six-pack of âBaileyâs Favouritesâ
- All 18 of their regular cupcake flavours
- Additional baked treats, coffee, and tea
Philips says every bit of support counts.
âWhether you purchase a treat, donate, or help spread the word every action makes a difference,â she said. âLetâs show up for Baileyâs girls, and shine a light on a broken system.â
Cupcasions is located at 1917 Kent Road.
