Valley Road between Sexsmith and Union roads is closed due to a private contractor striking a gas line.
A statement from the city says the earliest estimated time for the road to reopen is 6 p.m.
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area, and use alternate routes via John Hindle Drive and Summit Drive.
