A set of original works by UBCO students and alumni now adorns Âé¶čAVâs Cultural District.
The 13 colourful street banners adorn lamp posts along the Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA) commons and the art walk.
It is a partnership program between the city and UBC Okanaganâs (UBCO) Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies. The program began in 2020 to create opportunities for local artists during pandemic-related facility closures.
An exhibition opening celebration is scheduled for June 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the RCA, which will showcase banners from the past four years as well as an outdoor youth mural, and indoor exhibitions.
âWe are fortunate to be part of a community with immense talent,â said Christine McWillis, cultural services manager for the city. âThrough this partnership, we are proud to support local and emerging artists and have an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to engage with their works,â
Some banners incorporate augmented reality allowing three-dimensional animations. Itâs part of theâŻâPress Play!ââŻproject for undergraduate students.
âArt is a reflection of life,â explained Shawn Serfas, head of Department of Creative Studies at UBCO. âAs our students are going through our program, we engage them in the community in a variety of ways.â
