A new set of colourful street banners adorn the lamp posts along the Rotary Centre for the Arts Commons and along the Art Walk in Âé¶čAV’s Cultural District as part of the Outdoor Banner Exhibition program.

A set of original works by UBCO students and alumni now adorns Âé¶čAV’s Cultural District.

The 13 colourful street banners adorn lamp posts along the Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA) commons and the art walk.

It is a partnership program between the city and UBC Okanagan’s (UBCO) Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies. The program began in 2020 to create opportunities for local artists during pandemic-related facility closures.

An exhibition opening celebration is scheduled for June 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the RCA, which will showcase banners from the past four years as well as an outdoor youth mural, and indoor exhibitions.

“We are fortunate to be part of a community with immense talent,” said Christine McWillis, cultural services manager for the city. “Through this partnership, we are proud to support local and emerging artists and have an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to engage with their works,”

Some banners incorporate augmented reality allowing three-dimensional animations. It’s part of the “Press Play!” project for undergraduate students.

“Art is a reflection of life,” explained  Shawn Serfas, head of  Department of Creative Studies at UBCO. “As our students are going through our program, we engage them in the community in a variety of ways.”
