PHOTOS: Rock beats smoke, Â鶹AV gem show back after Saturday evacuation

Rutland Centennial Hall was evacuated July 12 for smoke

The Okanagan Rock and Gem Show was back at Â鶹AV's Rutland Centennial Hall July 11-13.

The show featured many local rock enthusiasts who collect, polish, and create with stones found locally.

Treasurer with 1120 Rock Club Cheryl Harris was proudly wearing a necklace created by a man from Vernon.

"It's a Montana agate that when he sliced it open it looks like an eagle," Harris said. "You just never know what you're going to find when you cut a rock open."

The weekend didn't go as smoothly as hoped. Harris said the fire department was called on July 12 after smoke started entering the building through air vents. The hall was evacuated for over two hours on Saturday.

The show was entry by donation and included a sand pit for kids, a silent auction table, and a chance to view some glowing stones in black light.
